Beside the main village, Laion also comprises the villages of Albions, Fraina, Novale di Laion, Ceves, Tanurza, S. Pietro as well as the territory from Ponte Gardena to Pontives. The village boasts a total of 2,700 inhabitants.
Laion provides a fairytale view of the Valle Isarco and can be reached by car or public service from Valgardena valley within a few minutes only. Due to its stunningly beautiful surroundings and its pleasant setting, Laion has become a popular holiday destination. A particular attraction is the return of the cattle from the alpine pastures at the end of the summer season. On this occasion a huge village fair is staged, attracting a large number of rubbernecks from all over.
The highest elevation is the Rasciesa mountain (2,260 m). Soaring in the east of the centre, its pastures are a popular hiking destination. At the opposite side of the valley, there is Castelrotto and the Alpe di Siusi, while in the west of Laion you can visit the Medieval city of Chiusa.
Also in autumn Laion is well-frequented, as the vineyards stretching in lower elevations down to the Valle Isarco and the chestnut forests covering the sun-drenched slopes make Laion an ideal place for the so-called "Toerggelen“, a traditional evening with roasted chestnuts and new wine.
