Ice skating has a long tradition in the Val Gardena valley. Each village offers its own skating ground, either with artificial or natural ice or an indoor ice rink
Where ice skating was only possible on natural ice, also artificial ice skating rinks were implemented during the last centuries in the Val Gardena valley. Every village has its own skating ground. The sport has a long tradition here, this is known by the history of the local hockey team HC Gherdëina which was founded already in the 1920s and by the international success of the ice figure skater Carolina Kostner who comes from the village of Ortisei (St. Ulrich).
At Selva Gardena (Wolkenstein), the Pranives Ice Stadium is located which is opened both in winter and in summer. Also a gym, bar, pizzeria and an external football ground are part of the facility.
At Ortisei and S. Cristina, however, outdoor ice skating grounds can be found. The natural ice skating ground in the Iman Centre in S. Cristina is opened in the afternoon during winter and offers a skate rental. There is the same possibility at the Setil ice skating ground in Ortisei. Have fun doing this fascinating winter sport!
