The traditional costume of Valgardena is one of the most beautiful of the entire Alpine area
The traditional costume of Val Gardena is one of the most decorated and beautiful costumes of the entire Alpine area. In the last decades, however, this costume has no longer been used as everyday clothes, but today people only wear it on special occasions such as religious feast days, parades and rarely it is also worn as wedding dress.
What is so particular about this costume is, that each condition distinguished themselves by an own costume, also depending on the age and civil status. On the most important feast days, however, everyone wore the black head with tassel, the so called "Cneidl", and a black coat, the so called "Bagana".
Moreover women's hair dress revealed if they were married or not. The hair of married women was tied to a knot, while women that were not married had a long queue. Another difference was the lace cloth, which is worn on the shoulders: married women wore a yellow one, not married women a red one.
However, there were also differences with men. Green cloth suspenders were worn by married men over a waistcoat with floral pattern, while unmarried men wore them over a red vest.
A particularly beautiful element of the traditional male costume is the leather belt, which is decorated with fantastic quill embroidery.
