The Ensemble Gherdëina was founded in 1996 on the initiative of Gebhard Piccolruaz. Its aim is to offer amateur singers from the entire Val Gardena in South Tyrol the opportunity to engage with challenging sacred and secular literature and to cultivate choral music from various epochs in flexible formations. When necessary, instrumentalists are also involved. The Ensemble has already held several sacred and secular concerts in places such as Arco, Brentonico, Tione, Trento, Assisi, Spoleto, St. Pölten, Millstatt, Hall in Tirol, Innsbruck, Salzburg (Austria), and Paris (France). During these events, works by composers such as Monteverdi (Vespro della Beata Vergine), Schütz, Vivaldi, Bach, Bertali, Mozart (Mass in C minor), Schubert (Mass in E-flat major and Mass in A-flat major), Mendelssohn, Verdi, Bruckner, Whitacre, M. Haydn (Missa Sancti Hieronymi, broadcast live on Ö1), and others have been presented. The Ensemble has also carried out projects in collaboration with other ensembles such as "Discantico" from Milan, "VocalArt" from Brixen, the orchestra "Marini-Consort" from Innsbruck, the "Ensemble Zefiro," and the chamber orchestra "Innstrumenti" from Innsbruck. The direction of the Ensemble Gherdëina is in the hands of Claudio Kerschbaumer, Felicitas Schweizer, Martin Runggaldier, and Samuel Runggaldier. Guest conductors who have already directed the Ensemble include KMD Rolf Schweizer, Heinrich Walder, Norbert Brandauer, Gerhard Sammer, Max Frey, and Alfredo Bernardini.
